Olympic Games & World Championships, London - UK

Project Specification

The London Olympic Park was built on a brownfield site where the soil was found to be heavily contaminated.  The remediation strategy used a ‘cover design’ to isolate the contamination by placing a geosynthetic marker layer and clean landscape soil on top to form a ‘human health layer’.  The Platipus Deadman Fixing System Plati-Mat (Olympic Spec) was used to anchor a vast amount of semi mature and specimen trees as driven anchors could not be used as they could have punctured the geosynthetic marker.  LDA Design in collaboration with Hargreaves Associates led the design of the Parklands and Public Realm for the entire 102 hectare site and masterminded its transformation from contaminated industrial land into a 21st century park. The London Olympic Park was the UK’s largest new urban park.  6 million visitors came to the park during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.  As well as remaining a sporting and entertainment venue, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park now caters for a wide range of everyday uses and users.
